This is a violent, bombastic and pretentious revenge thriller that tries too hard for meaning and ends up appearing hypocritical in the process. In other words, it’s a B-movie uncomfortably dressed in A-movie clothes.Revenge: A Love Story will be treated kindly, as it’s a genre film attempted without regard for China – and with the Hong Kong film market shrinking, I would not hesitate to agree. However, it’s also a mean-spirited film that exploits its actors (including Aoi, who was obviously cast because no Hong Kong actress would touch her tormented character with a ten-foot pole) into making something that appear to be meaningful. If given lower production values, Revenge would’ve simply been another disposable category-III exploitation film in the 90s, but at least it would then be aware of its own limited nature. In its current form, Revenge: A Love Story is a b-movie dressed up in a-movie clothes, and it definitely doesn’t fit.

Although this film is rated CAT III, it’s not your typical brainless sexual romp. It actually has a story with your typical Hong Kong Movie comedy with some likable characters. This video has great quality over previous releases.

The ending series of twists helps to elevate the story above the more superficial BIG.Lots of nudity and simulated sex makes this far less of a family picture than its American counterpart but I feel it has the better message to deliver and the more truthful ending. I was surprised that Peach was never shocked by her father carrying on with any woman he could get near but she may have already been immune to that behavior. Peach does a good job of remaining a child while in a woman’s body. Very good film but not for the prudish.
